The days following the 117th Boston Marathon were tough - eventually I'll get around to posting some of the race reports. It has been nice now that some of the emotional angst has been relieved that some are finally able to talk about their races.
There were a number of events this past weekend, and many were racing with heavy hearts. But you could also see the power of getting back out there, because there were so many inspired performances.
At the Sole of the City 10k - which I heard was long because they didn't account for the Pier V bridge being out - Charlie Larsen took the win in 34:08 and Jason Farber was 4th in 35:28. Curt Forst ran 38:01 and Cory Donovan had a solid race at 40:22. Jackie Range was 7th among the women in 42:18 and Marci Benda finished 20 seconds back for 9th.
Sunday had two big events: one a perennial favorite for running fast, and the other a new tradition on an untapped resource in Baltimore.
At Pike's Peek 10k, conditions could not have been better as a tailwind pushed runners downhill from Shady Grove to White Flint. Dustin Meeker led the way for our gang in an eye-popping 30:34. Which was only good enough for 18th place! It's a huge PR for Dusty, and somewhat amazingly it's double what he ran last Sunday for 5k. It's also puts him at all-time #3 on the Top 10 list. Not far behind was Graham Peck, who blazed a 30:47 for 22nd place. Before the race the pair had "30:59 or bust" on their minds, and they both knocked that out of the park!
Steve Febish and Dan Miranda each had incredible races as well. Steve ran 31:59 and Dan ran a 30+ second PR of 33:34. For Dan, after a couple of plain performances, it must have felt great to let one rip. Chrissie Ramsey also ran a PR (34:49) which means lowering her own team record, but the time was "only" good enough for 11th - one out of the money! Denise Knickman had a solid performance at 40:06.
Kris Simms showed just how much of a boss he is. Kris ran the Westminster Mile 10 days prior, then ran an awesome race at Boston. Less than a week later he was back on the starting line (albeit 10 minutes after the gun went off, he was the last person to cross the line) and ran through most of the field, finishing in 41:58. That's a whole lot of downhill miles!
And of course there was the 2nd Annual Mulligan Metric Marathon (and added Half Metric) along the scenic Gwynns Falls Trail. Thanks to all those who lent a hand! Bob Villanueva finished 17th in 2:03:54 and Keith Rice was 22nd in 2:08:31. Unfortunately for Mike Zero, his Course Record from last year was broken, but he will still always be the first winner of the race! In the Half Metric, Sara Breedlove was 5th in 1:04:29.
Our Purple Drink Athlete of the Week was a decision really between the performances from Pike's Peek, but having shared his goals with me prior to the race, Dustin Meeker earns this week's PDAW. Sometimes it's not about the times (even though his was very, very fast) and more about the result. Awesome job Dusty!

Pike's Peek Results
Pike's Peek Results are in! (They have it separated by M/F)
BIG day for Brennan Feldhausen, who ran his 2nd and 3rd fastest 5k's of all time en route to a monster personal best of 32:59 (27th place). Brennan's previous fastest 10k was a 35:13 from Leesburg 10k in August of 2009. A couple of years ago, I ran with Chrissie Ramsey as she finished 5th in 36:17. This year she finished 7th - but in an incredible 34:52! Easily breaks her own team record. Great job Brennan and Chrissie - those are some serious times results!
Kris Simms' blazed the wind-aided 2011 race to the tune of a 35:08, so was disappointed to not have "it" today. He managed to come through in 36:14, so really not that bad. Becky Parks had a great race as well, splitting 5k in a new PR (18:50), and holding on to finish at 38:12, a full minute and change faster than her 2011 race. Denise Knickman has gone really fast here before, so her 39:29 seems pretty average, but considering just last week she won a 5k in "only" 19:55, running faster than that twice-over seems like progress! Two of the day's big champions were Sam Wollner and Christa Wagner. Sam wasn't sure what he was capable of running, but thought 6:30s was reasonable, and Christa, who wasn't sure if she was going to run today, was hoping for about the same, so the two ran close together, and caught up to Big D, running amazingly even splits in the 6:20-22 range for the entire race. Christa's 5k split of 19:38 is "probably a 5k PR." Sam used that blazing downhill mile speed to run 1:04 for the last 0.2, narrowly missing a sub 39 minute time (39:02). Christa ran a near 6-minute PR (soft, admittedly) as she cruised in at 39:42. Really, really awesome!
Our local friends fared well (of the ones who I know):
GRC (men)
Dusen (13th, think first white guy) 30:05
Klim 31:32
Wertz 31:58
Dickson 32:31
Bain 32:48
PMurph 33:23
Tender 35:04
Jordan Zwick, formerly of New Balance, who ran with us that one night at TNT, ran 30:53, and Carlos RENJIFO ran yet another PR, finishing at 31:47, and then running 6.2 miles back to the cars with us, uphill into the wind, holding his bag of stuff.
GRC (women)
O'Hara 35:51
Donaldson 35:54
Young 36:11
Hendrick 36:23
Laseter 37:44
Special recognition goes to Brennan, Kris, and Carlos for being the first finishers in the Pike's Peek Double (running back to the start from the finish). They passed these two dudes who were really hurting in the last half mile. On our way out, we did see NBP running back up, solo, so props to her for doing the Double by herself!
Yesterday in track action, Brian Leiter beat all-comers in the 800m (1:51.78) at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg. Chris Snyder was 13th in 1:56.72. GRC's Chuck Kascur ran 1:55.
From Sunday...
Meg McNew scored another payday at the Iron Girl Half in Columbia...looks like Mike Mashner won the Mulligan Metric Marathon...Lee DiPietro won the Maryland Workers' Memorial 5k...Andy Thivierge was 4th at Port to Fort, BOBBY VAN ALLEN ran it...and just in: Steve Febish ran 2:53:55 at the Eugene Marathon!

Cashin' Out
Last week will be known as Katy Perry Week (get it - Hot and Cold?). With temps in the 80s on Monday, then 50 and rainy on Wednesday, then in the 80s again Saturday, before 40s and rain on Sunday, it was just not a fun week. But, that didn't mean it was a slow week, as we all know what happened at Wednesday's #MSM.
On the track, Louis Foudos ran a lifetime best for 800m at the McDaniel Twilight Meet (2:00.94), Tristram Thomas ran a season best 3:56.67 1500m at Princeton's Ellis Invite on Friday night (he almost didn't make it), and Tim Burns ran a 4:09.09 1500m at Widener Invite on Saturday. That was a 3 second improvement for Tim over his season best. Out in Oregon, Matt Jablonski ran a 3:57 1500 at their meet.
Saturday, the nice day of the weekend, also hosted some road races. Megan DiGregorio snuck an easy win at the 3.43 mile Hills of Milltown 5k, taking home some dollars. In Patterson Park, Andrew Jacobson finished 3rd in 17:46 at the Victim's Fund Run 5k, with Terry Decker in 4th at 18:10. Denise Knickman claimed another scalp, winning in 19:55.
Sunday's Mulligan Metric Marathon decided IT needed a mulligan, postponing to this coming weekend on account of the anticipated bad weather and its potential hazards on the Gwynns Falls Trail. That didn't stop 18 people from running the course as a fun run! Meg McNew ran the Rutgers UNITE 13.1 race in New Brunswick, taking 3rd in 1:24:01 - an 87 second PR! It seems as if the word got out that there was money on the line, as the men's top 3 were under 1:09 (including winner Demesse Teferra). Hirut Mandefro also sniffed it out, winning probably somewhat easily in about 1:20.
It was one of the tough weeks for deciding a Purple Drink Athlete of the Week. With so many people competing in the Main Street Mile, plus some great track performances, and a big half marathon PR, it was a very close call, but in the end, this week favored the elderly. Kris Simms, who turned 40 just a week ago, won his first masters' race, and took 8 seconds out of his 2011 Main Street Mile time on a slippery day. He ran a 4:27, pretty darn fast, and I expect to see him take Masters by storm.
Other Things
Lots of races this weekend. If you're staying local, we've got Operation Oliver 5k on Saturday on the east side, and Port to Fort 5k on Sunday on Key Hwy. Additionally, Mulligan Metric Marathon will be held Sunday, and of course, Pike's Peek 10k down in Rockville is Sunday.
If you missed The Runaround tonight on ESPN Radio, you missed a good one! We talked about yesterday's London Marathon, Mt. SAC, and talked with Jason Hartmann, 4th at Boston last week (1st American). You can listen to today's show here.
I forgot to shout this out already, but Emily Hurley's cousins started an apparel company called TWIFT Athletics. They make fun racing stuff for triathletes, etc. Check it out!
Finally, Dusty posted this article from Running Times, it's a few pages, but a good read.
