PJango Unchained

The P is silent.

As the very, very lengthy email pointed out, this weekend was chock full o' incredible performances. I actually wonder how many times I used the term "incredible" - someone want to check on that for me?

Rather than go through each and every one, I'm going to just do some highlights:

Frederick Half Marathon

Dave Berdan gets the W in a new PR of 1:05:40. Absolutely unreal when you consider his previous best performance came a couple of years ago at PDR (1:05:50) when he later went onto crush the Baltimore Marathon. If you haven't read his race recap, do it. It's really good. Especially the part about fighting the negative thoughts late in the race. Dave had a bogey on his heels the whole day, and then toasted him in the last mile. Great job Dave! Dan Miranda and Ed Jablonski ran the 1:40 and 1:45 pace groups, and Carly Page ran the relay with her friend. Looked like a fun day out in Frederick!

Broad Street 10 Miler

Steve Febish ran 51:50 for 19th place. That is some next level ish. Just two weeks ago Steve dusted off the cobwebs at Pike's Peek, breaking 32 minutes. He had been running for maybe 6 weeks or so following a pretty long period of injury time. The way he whipped himself into shape is nothing short of amazing, and this race is easily a contender for Performance of the Year. I also noticed Rodney Taylor ran, I didn't see his name on the awful results page earlier.

Flying Pig Marathon

PJ Anderer went big, and it paid off. 1:33 through the first half led him to nearly evenly split the race. He finished with a 13 minute PR of 3:07:59 and qualified for his first trip to Boston! PJ is the epitome of what our group is about. He shows up to virtually every run and comes ready to put in work. Everyone sees him working and he encourages and spurs on those around him. It's been a pleasure to watch him improve over the past couple of seasons.

Fiesta 5k

I didn't even realize this was on Saturday, but when I checked the results I saw we took the top spots for men and women, with Dan Miranda getting the overall win (16:39) and Sara Breedlove winning for the ladies in 18:33. It's the fastest she's run since 2002. Sara is another one who hits the track every week and just works hard. Matt Franco was 2nd in 17:01 and Nick Klastava was 8th in 17:51. All 4 are TNT regulars, so it comes as no surprise that TNT works! Sara earned this week's Purple Drink Athlete of the Week.

Port to Fort 6k

Not a whole lot to say about this race, but worth pointing out that Denise Knickman was 3rd after a late night of wine drinking. Jen Sheely continued her reign of 4th place finishes.

Elsewhere, Collin Anderson ran 1:15:33 at the Provo Half Marathon. A truly exceptional performance, he still did get beat (see: crushed) by a 20 year old Mormon girl. In Collin's defense, the race was at 5500' altitude with a net elevation loss of 900', so the course was still slower than it would have been at sea level, even if it was flat.

Ben Ingram rolled the Lincoln Half Marathon, starting at 6:10s and working down to 5:45s to finish in 1:17:31. Kevin and Meghan McGrath represented for TWSS at the Long Branch Half Marathon relay. Dave Ploskonka ran another marathon (at New Jersey) and so did Britt Kern (Pittsburgh).

I missed them in the email, but Patty Stott, at 27 weeks pregnant, ran 27:29 for 5k in DC, and Patrick O'Rourke got the win at the Dulaney Lionheart 5k.

And of course Friday night was the Maryland Alumni Mile, where Greg Jubb took home his first title as an eligible participant, using his massive kick to take down two-time defending champ Conrad Laskowski. Denise also ran here.

Pike's Peek Results

Pike's Peek Results are in! (They have it separated by M/F)

BIG day for Brennan Feldhausen, who ran his 2nd and 3rd fastest 5k's of all time en route to a monster personal best of 32:59 (27th place). Brennan's previous fastest 10k was a 35:13 from Leesburg 10k in August of 2009. A couple of years ago, I ran with Chrissie Ramsey as she finished 5th in 36:17. This year she finished 7th - but in an incredible 34:52! Easily breaks her own team record. Great job Brennan and Chrissie - those are some serious times results!

Kris Simms' blazed the wind-aided 2011 race to the tune of a 35:08, so was disappointed to not have "it" today. He managed to come through in 36:14, so really not that bad. Becky Parks had a great race as well, splitting 5k in a new PR (18:50), and holding on to finish at 38:12, a full minute and change faster than her 2011 race. Denise Knickman has gone really fast here before, so her 39:29 seems pretty average, but considering just last week she won a 5k in "only" 19:55, running faster than that twice-over seems like progress! Two of the day's big champions were Sam Wollner and Christa Wagner. Sam wasn't sure what he was capable of running, but thought 6:30s was reasonable, and Christa, who wasn't sure if she was going to run today, was hoping for about the same, so the two ran close together, and caught up to Big D, running amazingly even splits in the 6:20-22 range for the entire race. Christa's 5k split of 19:38 is "probably a 5k PR." Sam used that blazing downhill mile speed to run 1:04 for the last 0.2, narrowly missing a sub 39 minute time (39:02). Christa ran a near 6-minute PR (soft, admittedly) as she cruised in at 39:42. Really, really awesome!

Our local friends fared well (of the ones who I know):

GRC (men)

Dusen (13th, think first white guy) 30:05
Klim 31:32
Wertz 31:58
Dickson 32:31
Bain 32:48
PMurph 33:23
Tender 35:04

Jordan Zwick, formerly of New Balance, who ran with us that one night at TNT, ran 30:53, and Carlos RENJIFO ran yet another PR, finishing at 31:47, and then running 6.2 miles back to the cars with us, uphill into the wind, holding his bag of stuff.

GRC (women)

O'Hara 35:51
Donaldson 35:54
Young 36:11
Hendrick 36:23
Laseter 37:44

Special recognition goes to Brennan, Kris, and Carlos for being the first finishers in the Pike's Peek Double (running back to the start from the finish). They passed these two dudes who were really hurting in the last half mile. On our way out, we did see NBP running back up, solo, so props to her for doing the Double by herself!

Yesterday in track action, Brian Leiter beat all-comers in the 800m (1:51.78) at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg. Chris Snyder was 13th in 1:56.72. GRC's Chuck Kascur ran 1:55.

From Sunday...

Meg McNew scored another payday at the Iron Girl Half in Columbia...looks like Mike Mashner won the Mulligan Metric Marathon...Lee DiPietro won the Maryland Workers' Memorial 5k...Andy Thivierge was 4th at Port to Fort, BOBBY VAN ALLEN ran it...and just in: Steve Febish ran 2:53:55 at the Eugene Marathon!

Cashin' Out

Last week will be known as Katy Perry Week (get it - Hot and Cold?). With temps in the 80s on Monday, then 50 and rainy on Wednesday, then in the 80s again Saturday, before 40s and rain on Sunday, it was just not a fun week. But, that didn't mean it was a slow week, as we all know what happened at Wednesday's #MSM.

On the track, Louis Foudos ran a lifetime best for 800m at the McDaniel Twilight Meet (2:00.94), Tristram Thomas ran a season best 3:56.67 1500m at Princeton's Ellis Invite on Friday night (he almost didn't make it), and Tim Burns ran a 4:09.09 1500m at Widener Invite on Saturday. That was a 3 second improvement for Tim over his season best. Out in Oregon, Matt Jablonski ran a 3:57 1500 at their meet.

Saturday, the nice day of the weekend, also hosted some road races. Megan DiGregorio snuck an easy win at the 3.43 mile Hills of Milltown 5k, taking home some dollars. In Patterson Park, Andrew Jacobson finished 3rd in 17:46 at the Victim's Fund Run 5k, with Terry Decker in 4th at 18:10. Denise Knickman claimed another scalp, winning in 19:55.

Sunday's Mulligan Metric Marathon decided IT needed a mulligan, postponing to this coming weekend on account of the anticipated bad weather and its potential hazards on the Gwynns Falls Trail. That didn't stop 18 people from running the course as a fun run! Meg McNew ran the Rutgers UNITE 13.1 race in New Brunswick, taking 3rd in 1:24:01 - an 87 second PR! It seems as if the word got out that there was money on the line, as the men's top 3 were under 1:09 (including winner Demesse Teferra). Hirut Mandefro also sniffed it out, winning probably somewhat easily in about 1:20.

It was one of the tough weeks for deciding a Purple Drink Athlete of the Week. With so many people competing in the Main Street Mile, plus some great track performances, and a big half marathon PR, it was a very close call, but in the end, this week favored the elderly. Kris Simms, who turned 40 just a week ago, won his first masters' race, and took 8 seconds out of his 2011 Main Street Mile time on a slippery day. He ran a 4:27, pretty darn fast, and I expect to see him take Masters by storm.

Other Things

Lots of races this weekend. If you're staying local, we've got Operation Oliver 5k on Saturday on the east side, and Port to Fort 5k on Sunday on Key Hwy. Additionally, Mulligan Metric Marathon will be held Sunday, and of course, Pike's Peek 10k down in Rockville is Sunday.

If you missed The Runaround tonight on ESPN Radio, you missed a good one! We talked about yesterday's London Marathon, Mt. SAC, and talked with Jason Hartmann, 4th at Boston last week (1st American). You can listen to today's show here.

I forgot to shout this out already, but Emily Hurley's cousins started an apparel company called TWIFT Athletics. They make fun racing stuff for triathletes, etc. Check it out!

Finally, Dusty posted this article from Running Times, it's a few pages, but a good read.
