One of the things I hear Nate Brigham say often (in reference to his training) that he just keeps chip chipping away. Well on Sunday, in Columbus, Ohio, Nate did much more than chip - he cut down the whole tree! Nate ran a commanding 1:08:16 at the Columbus Half, finishing 9th, and rolling even splits. Much like they did at National Half in the spring, Nate and training partner Dustin Meeker ran close together as Dusty finished in 11th in a new lifetime best 1:08:30. That's a 90 second PR for Dustin. Really terrific stuff. Melissa Tanner also competed out there, finishing 12th in a tempo'd 1:25:23.
Probably the biggest event of the weekend was the Patterson Park XC race. With a strong field of...9 people, including 3 children, it was one of the most competitive races I've ever been a part of. The course was what Jeopardy! might call "potpurri" - a mish-mash of weaving around the park, up and down steep inclines, through intramural football games, and finally back at the finish. We're not sure how many, if any, ran the actually correct course, but we do know that the top 3 were a little short based on their times. Fortunately the finishing positions wouldn't have changed anyway, as Ed Aramayo took the win ahead of Brennan Feldhausen, and then Kris Simms. Doug Ripley made a rare appearance, but wasn't really surprised as he loves cross country racing. In the 2 person women's contest, it was Robyn St. Laurent, a young adult, taking the win over a tween who will probably one day be a state champ. In team scoring, the Snake Hill Whale Sharks (Ryan + Ed) won with 6 points, ahead of the Old Guys With Kids (Kris + Doug, 7) and the Locust Point Dominoes (Brennan + Robyn, 8). While the course was confusing, it was a fun and hard run, and shout to the girls who were out there cheering: Melissa M, Carly, Emily, Julie, Sara B, and Christa!
I went down to Army Ten Miler on Sunday in DC and am always surprised to be able to spot certain faces among the crowd of 26,000 finishers. Kyle Smits, Seattle resident of the past few years, was out there and ran 55:57. Afterwards he said he was pretty pleased with the effort as he tries to return to competitive racing. I remembered to check on Nick Gehlsen's results (59:55), and we saw PJ Anderer (1:05:13) and Dave Ploskonka (1:07:13) out there.
In Hunt Valley, Dave Berdan, a week removed from his Baltimore Marathon win, took his 5th or 6th consecutive Race for the Cure 5k win in 16:17. Props to Louis Foudos on his 2nd place performance, running 17:21.
Conrad Laskowski offered to help pace a high school teammate to a sub 18 minute 5k at the Shrewsbury Classic. Now, for a guy who could easily have done that in high school, he should have had no problem doing that himself - but Conrad gave a hot speed injection and, playing the role of domestique, allowed his team leader to take the win in 17:24. C-Rad finished 2nd in 17:28.
At the Runner's World Half Marathon, Bryn Burkholder ran just about the same as she ran last year (1:36:54), and across the Delaware in Flemington, NJ, Dave Berardi ran the USATF Master's XC Champs. He ran 17:52 and helped his Baltimore-Washington Athletic Club finished 2nd to the talented Atlanta Track Club.
At the Tussey Mountainback 50 Miler, Joel Gladfelter and his 2 friends ran the relay. Sounds like his friends had a rough go, and Joel held the race together to make sure they beat Henry Peck, who was running the 50 Miler solo. Henry of course is Graham's dad, and together they own the World Record for fastest father-son in the same marathon from last year's Chicago. Mr. Peck killed it, running 7:31!
Lauren Dennisuk ran the Detroit Free Press Marathon, briefly detouring into Canada (don't worry, that's the way the course goes!), and crushed it! Based on her running log, she's been running really well lately despite the challenge of med school, and on Sunday she finished 9th in 3:13:00!
Finally, a few results I had missed initially: Bobby Van Allen (yes, BVA of Hopkins coaching fame) ran a 3k XC while his team raced. He ran 11:55. Hey, it's a start! Hannah Southworth continues her comeback trail as she ran the Tufts Women's 10k on Monday, and Chris Scott finished his triathlon season at the REV3 South Carolina aka USAT Long Course Championships, going 5:20. That's two half iron distances races for him this year!
Great work all, but in the Purple Drink Athlete of the Week race, it went to Nate this time. Although it was probably pretty close between him and all of us who ran the Patterson Park XC race.

Crazy Kids
Last weekend was fairly quiet. Despite a good number of events, there wasn't much racing going on.
Last Thursday, the Three Amigos (Graham Peck, Alex Battaglino and Tim Burns) headed up to York College (PA) to run their Last Chance Meet. The guys toed the line in the 5000m and quickly it was Graham with a commanding lead. He was going for broke; 14:59 or bust. He was on pace through 2400m but then the laps starting taking longer, and he wasn't able to get back into his rhythm. Still, Graham took the win in 15:28.47. Alex B hasn't raced in a while. Months, actually. He's been working back to form and ran a great race, finishing 3rd in 16:05.09. And Tim Burns showed improvement from his last couple of outings, running 16:34.04 for 7th.
On Saturday, Graham doubled down, winning the Preakness 5k in sloppy conditions (17:40). Jason Farber was 2nd in 17:51 and Joel Gladfelter rounded out the top 3 in 18:33. The other Joel (Brusewitz) ran, running 19:25, and Jon Miller was just behind in 19:34.
Everyone discovered that the Maryland Half Marathon was long by 0.4 of a mile or so. Curt Forst ran 1:23:56 for 5th place, which really would have been in the 1:21 range. Cory Donovan and his pacing partner took their 1:40 group into a 1:41:34 finish, which couldn't be helped when the race was long.
At the Hills of Milltown 5k, Dave Berardi finished 4th in 20:04.
Our Purple Drink Athlete of the Week went to Graham.
Plenty more race action this week (and for the next many weeks, now). Triathlon season kicks off in Columbia this Sunday, to all those racing - crush!

C'mon
There may have been virtually no races in the area, but this past weekend was far from quiet. With the Ravens epic win in Denver on Saturday, most in Baltimore were preoccupied with, oh, ripping mirrors off of cars.
But way, way down, at the southernmost point of the United States, in the tiny hamlet of Key West, Alyssa Godesky REVved up her triathlon season with an early half ironman. The setting may have looked like a Corona commercial, but the conditions were far from hospitable for northerners racing long in January. A rough ocean swim followed by flat, windy, and hot roads on the bike and run made for a tough day for all competitors. Alyssa had a strong swim and terrific bike, and stomped the run to finish 2nd overall behind professional Terra Castro. Her time of 5:01:31 would have been a PR until last season, which is a great sign for races to come.
From an sleepy town to the city that never sleeps, Kevin McGrath ran the NYC Runs Central Park 10 Miler. Unlike NYRR events, this race had a cap of 500 people, which is a lot more chill. Kevin took the low key race as an opportunity to reintroduce some tempo running into his regimen, and ran a 1:25:45 to finish 203rd. Kevin will be heading down to Baltimore this weekend so perhaps you'll get to see him again!
And of course the Purple Drink Athlete of the Week...
Alyssa's 4th fastest swim and bike splits were enough to put plenty of space between her and 3rd, and you can never be mad finishing runner-up to a pro. So congrats, you are this week's PDAW!

Baltimore 10 Miler Post-race Celebration?
This just in: I (Ke$ha) will be going to San Francisco for 2 months (unless for some strange reason I become completely miserable) this summer. I will be leaving 2 days after Bmore 10 Miler. Now, I will definitely not find as cool of a group to run with there, but I'm sure it will be fun... and hilly.
Anyway, I was thinking since a lot of people would be around after Baltimore 10 Miler, I could get to see a lot of you to say bye for the summer! Unless you want to pay the airfare to visit me in San Fran. So, I'm giving you all a heads up super early in hopes that we can all have some drinks after the race before I leave for the west coast.
Bmore 10 Miler is on a SATURDAY which means we can party hard afterwards and leave me feeling like I left on the proper note. I'm open to places to go, but I assumed Fed Hill or Canton, naturally. Also, for those who witness the debacle that was my birthday, I promise to a) show up to my own celebration at a decent time and b) not be a (drunk) glass case of emotions.
Mark your calendars: June 18th!

DJ Turn it Up, It's about damn time to live it up...
cause it's my birthday Friday, and I wanna party Ke$ha style (minus the drugs). So, if anyone is down, you are all invited to come out in Fed Hill Friday night! not sure exactly where the party will start possibly my sisters, but I will definitely be at Stalking Horse. Prior to this, I wanted to see if a group would like to go to the Os game.... I am going with a few people, and if a lot of people want to go we will probably just do the cheap Friday night tix deal. Drink beforehand at Pickles and whatnot. Hmm, we could make this the first mandatory FF for the season.
My cell phone is now working, for those who have my number. I'd love to see you all out!!!

This Place About to BLOW
Dirt and glitter cover the floor
We're pretty and sick
We're young and we're bored
Is everyone ready for the weekend? It's going to be sick. First, TERPS play Duke tonight at 7pm. Second, Pub Run is tomorrow. Third, Shamrock 5k is Sunday. So here's the weekend's lineup:
PUB RUN
Run starts at 8am from Slainte in Fells Point. I heard from a few people about helping, so sent an email out with assignments. If you find that you are able to help, please show up at Slainte between 7 and 7:15. We'll need help with registration and corraling people out on the course. Following the run, feel free to stick around and hang out for a bit at Slainte!
SHAMROCK 5K
Race starts at 1:15pm. Parking, for those who may be coming from areas where you have to drive, is probably best available on or near Guilford Ave, particularly under 83. Remember, if you're picking up your stuff on race day, you must pick it up by 11:30 from the Downtown Athletic Club. No exceptions are made after this time.
POST SHAMROCK
Obviously people hang out at the finish for a little while, which is always fun. But, for post-post race activities, Ed and I have conferred and will open our house for a fun afternoon on the rooftop deck. As much as I don't want to let anybody know where we live, I will do so in the name of fun. Plus, we live two blocks from the Square now, so it opens up that world of debauchery (and food). I will head home shortly after the race, so people are welcome to come over we'll say from 2:30pm. Our address is 925 S. Ellwood Ave. If you know where the Square is, it's real close. If you're not familiar, the best idea is probably to take Boston St and make a left turn onto Ellwood (near DuBurns Arena) and then park wherever you can find a spot on that street (it's a one-way street, headed north).
