Olympic Trials: Women's 10,000m

Hastings, Uhl, Cherobon-Bawcom headed to London

The women's 10,000 meter race at U.S. Olympic Trials had much less on the line than did the men's event. With only 4 women having run the Olympic "A" standard and one of them being Shalane Flanagan - who says she will NOT run the 10k in London to focus on the marathon - it basically meant that the 3 women that have the A standard were in regardless of their finish place/time (unless someone from the field managed to run under the A standard in the race).

Those 3 women of course are: Amy Hastings (@HastyHastings), Lisa Uhl (@lisa_uhl) and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (@JanetRuns).

Natosha Rogers - who fell early in the race - made an amazing move inside of 300 meters to go, but it was Amy Hastings, another 4th place marathon finisher, who took the win ahead of Rogers and Shalane Flanagan. Lisa Uhl finished 4th. Final lap was 65 seconds and it looked tough. Bawcom finished way back, but she's still going to London. It was a 16 second PR for Rogers, kudos.

Flanagan did do a 2h50m "training run" marathon earlier this week, so no sweat that she was outkicked. But I'm sure she's not psyched she didn't win.

Note: Rogers finished 2nd, but does not get to go to London because she failed to meet the Olympic A standard. As Nate pointed out on Twitter, it's messed up - but that's our system.

Olympic Trials: Men's 10,000m

Rupp, Tegenkamp, Ritzenhein heading to London

Galen Rupp wins the men's 10,000m at Olympic Trials in a new Trials record of 27:25.33. Matt Tegenkamp and Dathan Ritzenhein were 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in 27:33.94 and 27:36.09. Rupp and Tegenkamp had previously recorded Olympic "A" standard times (27:45) but Ritzenhein needed to run under that or risk not being able to run in London.

The early pace was set by Rupp, who led the field through driving rain in Eugene. According to their coach, Alberto Salazar, Rupp and Ritzenhein were slated to share the lead approximately every 2 laps. By the halfway point, the pace was just below that of the necessary time, and the three men picked up the tempo, dropping just about the entire field.

The trio ran together until about 2 laps to go, when Rupp took off, splitting 62 seconds each for his last two laps. He entered the final straightaway with a smile on his face, waving to the crowd. This is Rupp's 4th consecutive US title at the distance. For Ritz and Tegenkamp, terrific races and surely will help him get over the disappointment of finishing 4th at the Marathon trials. Also great to note that he ran that in January, and then pulled himself back into 10k shape a few months later.

Nick Symmonds Goes on Date with Paris Hilton

The story continues...

Nick Symmonds jetted down to Los Angeles for a brief meet-up with Paris Hilton, before heading to Eugene for the 2012 US Olympic Trials. According to NBCOlympics.com's Joe Battaglia, Symmonds came bearing gifts of the pink variety, including a pink Timex watch and pink Sno Balls, the coconut-cake-creme confection by Hostess.

Following the date at the Beverly Hills Hilton, Symmonds received an email from the socialite with her phone number attached.

No word yet on whether Hilton will attend the Olympic Trials, which begin this week at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Symmonds enters the race as the favorite to make the Olympic team, and continues to progress toward his goal of finishing on the medal stand in the London games.

Weekend Update

Greetings from chilly and windy Charleston, South Carolina!

Tom Stott asked me to delete his post about a long run Sunday.  He is no longer able to make it.  But don't let that stop you from running if you were planning on it!  Simply start a new post, or tweet at BMoreRunning and it'll show up on the blog.

The report from Houston is very good right now.  Chrissie is all set up with her personalized water bottles and the conditions seem like they are going to be very conducive to a good race.  There are 47 water tables at each aid station for the hundreds of athletes, and each aid station is a quarter mile long as a result!  Chrissie also went to get Meb to sign her picture (the one of him passing her at NYC 2009 that was published in Runner's World) and he inadvertently handed off the picture...AND his race packet, including his bib.  The two parted ways and quickly one of his entourage came back to retrieve the packet.  Phew!

Chrissie's bib is #200.  From what I understand, there MAY be runner tracking via www.chevronhoustonmarathon.com tomorrow, but I'm not totally sure.  However, every running news outfit and their mother is on site, so if you follow any running Twitter feeds, I'm sure you'll see it.  They started two new ones today, @USMenMarathon and @USWomenMarathon which are allegedly going to feed live splits.  Of course, if you don't want to know results, don't go on Twitter or the Internet!  And wait to watch highlights on NBC at 3pm.

GO CHRISSIE!
