On a Tuesday

The first post of 2015!

After the hustle and bustle of mid December, it really gets quiet. There aren't a ton of races around Christmas, and even if there were, most people are a little preoccupied. For us, we fill the time with our favorite Christmas tradition: the #TWSSChristmas photo contest!

It's always fun to see how folks are spending their Christmases, running or not, and we had a lot of submissions this year. Naturally, it appears as though hardly anyone voted, which means they either didn't care to or didn't know how to. I'll declare a winner this week.

My trip home to New Jersey was pretty balmy, enough so that I was able to make it into the chilly Atlantic Ocean following each of my 3 runs. The 3rd was part of the Polar Bear 5k in Asbury Park. I could hardly believe it had been 4 years since I last did this year, but indeed it was December of 2010 that I last ran it. It was still a 5 miler back then, although race day featured an incredible Nor'easter that shortened the race to a 5k. The sea looked angry that day and I made the decision to not go in.

This year was much milder and after my amazing 19:11 5k (gun time, 9th place) in which Conrad basically lapped me (3rd, 17:44, after stopping and waiting for me at the turnaround), he and I ran into the ocean and dunked ourselves. Not to be outdone, Amy and my little sister, Meghan, accepted the challenge and also went in the water after the race. For their terrific race AND getting in the water, they each earned a share of the final Purple Drink Athlete of the Week of 2014.

That brought us to the final week of the year, split between 2014 and 2015. In 2014's waning moments, Erik T. Orberg recorded the last race result - an 8th place at the Vienna Silvesterlauf (5.33km) race in Austria. A couple spots and 12 seconds faster than 2013!

A number of people kicked off the new year in style:

At the Resolution Run 5k in Patterson Park, Justine DiGregorio took the team's first win, Jen Sheely was 6th and Karen Menge laced up her shoes and did her first race in who-knows-how-long.

Down in MoCo, Conrad Laskowski was 4th at the New Year's Day 5k, while Andy Sovonick made a return to running and Tom Stott picked up where he left off at the end of the year.

On New Year's Day we also bid adieu to our dear friend Brennan, who, after 7.5 years in Baltimore, moved to Milwaukee to begin a new job with the Brewers. It was a sad day and he will be missed, but his spirit lives on every time you make a memory. Or send a text.

In a year that was truly full circle, I was glad I was able to spend New Year's Eve with the same crew as last year (Brennan, Zero and my brother) when we went up to New York for the Central Park Midnight 4 miler.

Over the weekend there was a heated battle at the Frozen 5k in Virginia, featuring Team HPB athletes Alyssa Godesky and Leslie DiMichele. Alyssa fought bravely for the win, but in the end Leslie's final move proved enough for the win (19:27 to 19:34). Stephanie Granlund also raced, starting the year with a strong 28:11.

Earning our first PDAW of the year was Karen Menge - it's unnerving sometimes to jump in a race after a long hiatus, but we respect the gumption of getting back out there!

Party Like it's 2012

Remember that song that came out at the end of 2010?  Nikki Minaj was on it.  Did their label just not realize that 2012 was a year away?  Did not hear that song ONCE this year.

Anyway, there was a lot of running going on as we left 2011 and said hello to 2012:

Brennan Feldhausen ran the Run into the New Year 5k in Milwaukee, with his sisters in tow.  He felt that the race distance was accurate, but the mile markers were not, as he hit 3 miles in 16:30, but didn't finish until 18:11.  That's an RM style last 0.1.

In York, PA, Stacie Wentz, who seriously never races, ran the Double Deuce, a 2 mile run that starts at 11:45pm.  She didn't get to the finish by midnight, but her unofficial time of 16:24 would be a team 2 Mile record (road)!  But rules are rules and I need to see official times for it to be ratified.  Stacie technically was the first race finisher of 2012 that means.

Collin Anderson did some 24 hour Run Through the Years in AZ, where he ran 100k and then called it a day.  Then he texted "I ran 63 miles yesterday and now I'm rdrukn."

Our 2nd Annual NYE Run had a terrific showing of something like 15 or 17 people, I couldn't believe it!  Meeting at 2pm from THE Washington Monument (yes, that's right, Baltimore had it first), we took a scenic trip along the Jones Falls, through Clipper Mill, up into Druid Hill Park and down through Hopkins.

The next morning was a whole new year, which meant clean slate Top 10 lists.  Dan Miranda set a great early mark for the 5k, running 16:44 in a 3rd place effort at the Resolution Run 5k.  Jack Flowers was 5th in 17:25, and Joel Gladfelter rounded out the top 10 in 18:30.  On the ladies side, Christine Trzcinski took 3rd in 21:42, Emily Keyes ran 23:16, and Karen Menge, getting her 2012 goals cracking, 23:46.

At the BRRC Father Time Frolic 5 Miler (Prediction Run), Tristram Thomas unsuccessfully predicted that he would run 37:30.  He got to the line, knew he was quick, jogged around a little, but still finished in 35:39.  His miscue landed him in 41st place.

I found a few other results from 1/1/12, including Luke Belford's 5th place finish at the RASAC New Year's Day 10k (37:53) and results from the Winfield Mile, where Ryan Stasiowski won in 4:47.10 and Louis Foudos won some oreos, running 5:14.80.

Meanwhile, our Sunday Long Run group consisted of myself, Dusty, Nate, Seth, and Conrad, who drove up from Bethesda following a late night 007-themed party.  Boss.

Our Purple Drink Athlete of the Week was for the 6-day week ending 12/31, and I took into account the voting that took place in the TWSS Christmas picture contest.  It was a tie, 4 votes apiece, for Joel and Brennan, so the tiebreak went to Brennan for racing on Saturday.  It was Brennan's first PDAW of 2011, and our last.  This week will include races from 1/1.

Most impressive, perhaps, was the 18 person showing at the first track workout of the new year (it was 18, not 17, Tristram was right).  With temperatures barely clipping 23 degrees, and a wind chill far, far below that, I was impressed by the showing.  Truly, Winter Track Warriors.

Tristram and Tim Burns are looking to head down to PG on Sunday for a track meet.  The BRRC Frozen Finger 5M is on Saturday.  Sunday Long Run will be in effect, and I hear a group of girls will be going this week so there will be lots of people to run with!

Bottoms Up

Well as I was the only one who raced this past weekend, and it wasn't a Purple Drink worthy performance, we will either go without it, or it will go to the girl who not only beat me pretty handily in the 3 mile race, but she also went into the water after.

It was an out and back course, 1 mile was the length and we did it 3 times (shortened from 5 miles). On the way out we had the tailwind, so it wasn't as bad, but coming back into the wind was gnarly. The snow was blinding. I finished 5th in 19:28, winner was just under a minute ahead. The girl beat me by 30ish seconds and finished 3rd.

Then I proceeded to get snowed in for a few days. That was also nuts. I was jealous of all you non-snowed in folks able to move around.

So tomorrow is New Year's Eve, and as mentioned in the email we should celebrate somehow with a run. In talking to a few of you, we will accomplish the following:

1) Run in daylight
2) No pre-determined route (well obviously I have an idea of where we will run, but how we get there is TBD)

Our decision was to run north, so that we get both a quality run and go somewhere somewhat interesting and also quasi-safe. My plan is to get in a 90 minute run, in other words, if you do not want to run that long, bring a watch and head back when you feel like it. There is a possibility, depending on how well it's timed, that the run could be longer than 90. It will not be less.

Since we all live in different places, and for me to run anywhere already adds 6 miles, I think Kris Simms' house is a good meeting point since the route will head north. Kris isn't going to be there so we can park in his enormous parking lot for a little while.

Therefore, our final verdict, based on people presumably having NYE plans and things to do to prepare, and where I want to take the run, we will assemble at Kris' house at 2pm. He lives at 712 Park Ave, but you'll have to go around back in the alley as we won't be in the house.

Blue Moon Run Canceled

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091230/ap_on_sc/us_sci_blue_moon

The last one of these was in 1990, the next isn't until 2028, so you have the rare opportunity to go for a run on New Year's Eve under the light of full moon that is also the 2nd of the month!

Waaa waaaaa...the race has been canceled due to a sheet of ice on the trail, and this was before the nonsense that came through this morning.

Merry Belated Christmas

I managed to stay off the computer for a few days, which was pretty sweet. Actually it was because I forgot to bring my laptop home and my family is always using this one. Anyway I trust by now everyone had a great Christmas and is preparing for New Year's Eve debauchery. Just a few heads up:

1. On NYE (Thursday) we are considering holding a little Full Moon Run up at NCR Trail to start somewhere around 6 or 6:30. It would be an informal "race" of about 6 or 7 miles (really however much you felt like running) with some treats afterward. You'd be back in time for partying. Jim and Pete will be discussing today whether they're going to do it, so I'll let you all know.

2. Did anyone race this week or weekend? If no races get submitted we might not have a PDAW!
