What a bunch of whining snitches.

Read this article about how training for a marathon is really hard.....on the people who have to put up with us! What a bunch of slackers. I

wow. those were some of the lamest annoyances i've ever heard. he talks about running? takes ice baths? what's a poor spouse to do?

i don't know, maybe be happy he/she's not into blow and hookers?

just a thought.

i need to use that one more at home.

Kendra:"honey, i thought you were going to clean up the kitchen today."
Ben:(from the couch, watching tv and drinking a beer) "at least i'm not into blow and hookers."

end of conversation

you have to admit, some people are OBSESSED with running...and for people that are around them that are not, it can get pretty annoying. Obviously when you are training for a marathon, etc. it can consume your life...but everything in moderation.

I didn't read this article yet, but I read something from BG's blog that I felt you guys (partic Alex) would like.

I didn't want to post it separately.

GOD DAMMIT. I just posted something and it didn't take.

Anyway I just read this article and let's be honest - if you're running 80mpw and can't qualify for Boston, you should probably just stop.

Let's also be honest, running an hour each day and two hours maybe on the weekend is not a huge time commitment for most, and will allow you to achieve some pretty lofty goals.

Furthermore, running does not take so much out of you that you are completely worthless and spend all day recovering.

However, in fairness to these spouses, they probably were unaware of what they had gotten themselves into. Most of these douchebags probably were not raised in the lifestyle, but rather picked it up in the last few years. Unlike us, who are already in it and pretty transparent to everyone around us.

Since my husband is not cool enough to be a team member, I am posting his comment for him.

So my spouse and her cousin are runners... some of you may know them. I am not. I really don't care about splits, times, trials, hill workouts, new shoes, new gear, or really any of it. Yet I am exposed to it on a daily basis. Yes it's great that runners are out there exercising, I applaud that, but stop talking about it incessantly. It really isn't the coolest sport around. I mean 70 year olds are out there running. I can actually run. Most humans can actually run. Some faster and farther than others. Big deal.

I had no idea what I was getting into with this marriage and life, but that shouldn't matter. If I don't want to talk about it all day, then shut the f up about it.

It really is annoying.

I just feel like the bottom line here is that EVERYONE has a friend/significant other/roommate (that's for you, Kris) who has hobbies that you may not like and think are stupid and annoying. You have a few choices in this situash. You can humor them, and just secretly on the inside know that you don't really care (probably the best option). You can stop being friends/roomies with them. OR you can write to the NY Times about how much you don't like it and it inconviences you. Odds are that if you are going for the third option, there's probably a bigger problem in your relationship, and it's not about the running (or the bike, in Lance's case).

Does Bryan want to be able to post? I can grant him the privilege.

I love how the NYT has some of the worst sports writing in the world. They are too focused on turning sports into clever metaphors and capturing "unheard" perspectives like in this story.

They have no perspective on sports - hell they are too "le tired" to work out because they were out up town till 5am at the midnight one-man production of "Waiting for Godo".

Here's a great burn on NYT sports writing from one of my favorite blogs (other than this one):

"I bet these were crappy people before they got into running."

Amen.

Wow. Such passion. Such fire. I agree with Alex, these "athletes" were off the wall. On the other hand. How can you hold a grudge against your spouse for busting their balls trying to look hot? In fact, we should write an article about runners who hold a grudge against their non running spouses. Oh...um Bryan man, you are hot, you don't need to run.

i agree that the times captured some douche baggery that is not present on twss. But, i guarantee that most of us have at some point in our running lives have bored the crap out of somebody talking about running or we've acted strangely the week before or after a big race or we've missed "important" events because of running. Admit it - we all have a problem on some level - it might not be hookers and blow - but, we aren't exactly "normal".

for my part, i do my best not to bore my non running friends/roommate with running... that's what the blog is for.

would it be any better if your spouse started boring you with the intricacies of model train building? stamp collecting?

i promise nobody looks better because they spend 20 hours/week in the basement building a scale model of their home town for a model train to travel through.

What else would we discuss?

Peace, I'm out, I'm going running.

Ben said...

so, we're good looking model train builders? it's worse than i thought.

This kind of reminds of the "fantasy football player who thinks everyone he comes within 15 feet of needs a daily update of his team."

A couple of weeks ago I had a conversation with a coworker in which I said I was considering giving up running for Lent, because it's my only addiction and has fed my ego more than anything else over the years. Plus, it's two of the deadly sins, pride and wrath, wrapped into one. I think my coworker might give up chocolate.

i think too much of anything might be considered "gluttony".

Make that three deadly sins. I'm a goner.
