What were we thinking as we drove the short drive down Route 2 this morning, with a map to nowhere to a cross country race that may or may not exist? Although it was definitely suspect at the time, Team TWSS came out victorious, sweeping the top 5 men's spots in the Metro Harriers XC Championships. Led by Kipchirchir's stellar 28:04, the rest of us ran as a group until about mile 3.5 when Ben surged forward to take second (29:36). Alex was next to cross, about 12 seconds back, and then Arjun as 4th, 10 seconds back of him. I finished in 30:15 for 5th. Claire was 10th overall and the first female (out of 2). In fact, there were only 16 people running, so if we hadn't showed up it would have been a 10 person race.
The course was pretty neat, actually not that bad at all. A double loop figure 8 around these fields of Curtis Bay Elementary School and Baybrook Park. The course was actually decently hilly, but for every up we also got to go down. A Glen Burnie high school kid, outfitted in hoodie, baggy shorts and mp3 player, took the lead from the gun, while we sat as a pack through the first mile (6:14). Kip had a small lead at this point, which was erased when he went the wrong way (at least he learned what a backstop is today) and we hit mile 2 in 6:00. Mile 3 was about 5:58, then I assume, at least for me, my splits were right around 6 for the next two.
The race director was a trip, very Baltimore, and really cool guy. We all got medals, and proudly wore them (except for Claire) as we went to Dunkin' Donuts. We'll definitely have to put together more people for their series next fall, and to their track meets in the summer.
