Blue Monday

According to a UK psychologist, today is known as "The Most Depressing Day of the Year." The combination of no holidays, cold weather, and failed New Year's resolutions makes people feel really down.

Well, maybe that's the case up in New England, but in Ravenstown, it was a pretty good day.

The Ravens weren't the only ones tearing it up this weekend, as the kind weather made for some solid runs. Of course, right after I sent the email I noticed that BRRC had already posted results from yesterday's GPS 8 Miler in Loch Raven. Jack Flowers finished runner-up in 47:42, and Joel Brusewitz laced 'em up to finish 4th in 50:19. Great to see Joel starting the year off right! Denise Knickman had a great race, winning (for the second week in a row, as she also won the BRRC Frozen Finger 5M last weekend in 33:33) in 55:07. Just two seconds behind her was Terry Decker, in 15th. Meg McNew finished 2nd among women in 57:38. She used it as her long run - and by long I mean LONG. She ran up to Loch Raven, and then did the race. Crazy! Molly Eagen finished 20th in 1:12:36.

At the Maryland Invite, Liz Laseter finished 4th in the 5000m, running 18:22.17. That's a great time early in the season, especially indoors.

Out in Tempe, AZ, Bob Villanueva paced a friend to a Boston-qualifying 3:33:01 at the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n Roll Arizona Marathon.

Down in Baton Rouge, home of the Bayou Bengals of LSU, Pete Mulligan ran the Louisiana Marathon. He was pacing the 4:20 group and brought them in at 4:19:19. Terrific job Pete, and since he had to watch the Ravens game from the airport following his selfless pacing of others, he earned this week's Purple Drink Athlete of the Week.

Ball So Hard U.

Pete was ordering singlets the other day and it needed a team name.  And not like a "TWSS" team name, a team belonging to a school.  I said why not use Ball So Hard University, they play in the Hip Hop North Conference.  With the BSHU mantra on the forefront of Baltimore's mind this weekend, let's hope they cause New England to have a long winter!

We ordered some singlets.  We should have them in time for Club Challenge.  Speaking of Club Challenge...

This is me officially reminding Conrad, Nate, and Tristram, to sign up!  We are almost full with our whopping 23 guys and 18 girls.  Even Chrissie signed up!  PS, I love that you signed up as Christy.

This is also a reminder about our workout scheduled for Sunday.  This workout will take place regardless of the conditions, which I'm hearing may be less than stellar.  Come prepared, dry clothes for post-run, towel, etc.  Bring water bottles and I'll carry them in the car for you.  In order to get the day moving, please be there prior to 9am, and warmed up and ready to run right at 9.

In addition to the challenge of Club Challenge, I challenge you to another challenge:

How many guys can we get under 60 minutes?  And how many girls can we get under 70 minutes?

Howard County, as usual, is fielding a very strong team for both men and women, and Westminster RRC's women's team is always solid.  Last year, our women's team was very strong and expects to be competitive again, while our men were outraced by HCS.  In order to avoid that from happening again, I think we'll need to have all of our scorers (12) under 58:30.  For the women (only 4 scorers, a truly unfavorable setup) we'll need to have them under 1:06, if not faster.

No matter the outcome, I am positive we'll have some great performances that will set the bar for the rest of the season!  So let's get things started with Sunday's workout, and then a Ravens victory!

Meg's Picks - Playoff Edition

With 4 great gridiron matchups on the slate for this weekend, we couldn't contain Meg to just one Pick of the Week.  Here's her predictions for the NFL Playoffs Round 2:

Denver at New England

New England.  Despite Tim Tebow's amazing winning OT drive to advance against the Steelers, Tim does not stand a chance against the team that crushed them in week 15 of the regular season. Also, Tom Brady is sexier than Tim Tebow - MM

Houston at Baltimore

Baltimore.  They get to play a home game against a team that is in the playoffs for the first time in its history.  I, Meg McNew, will personally be in Houston and would prefer that they experience the heartache of defeat - MM

New Orleans at San Francisco

49ers.  New Orleans was the "team of destiny" a couple of years ago, and even though Drew Brees is a lights-out QB, the 49ers, named for the Gold Rush of the late 1840s that drove population into the SF/Bay Area, have really put themselves into the upper echelon of football - MM

NY Giants at Green Bay

Packers.  How can you root against the team with the best record in football, and the defending World Champions?  Pack beat the Giants in New Jersey in early December, and now the Giants will have to go to the frozen tundra that is Wisconsin.  Discount Double Check! - MM

The expressed views above are entirely the thoughts and words of Meg McNew, nobody else.
