That's funny, I was both selling and purchasing those "i'm slow, i know, get over it" shirts at the expo. Guess I'm one of those runners.
The one valid point is that these races are expensive and every minute they have people on the course costs them money. So the $160 I might pay for New York covers me, but if I take 7 hours that actual cost might be more. (Forget for a minute how much that race/RD makes - this is more true for smaller races).
Maybe the guy from the Des Moines marathon should have put an asterisk - if you're leading the race you'll probably get stopped by a train with a quarter mile to go, allowing the guy behind you to catch up and forcing a 400m sprint.
I bought NYT on my way back from michigan today. There were a few letters to the editor about this article - one was from a 70 year old marathoner who said that he agreed with the six hour rule. His last marathon was in "2 hours 245 minutes and 18 seconds."
um, obvi that last was about the furinox post not this one.
while i think the more ppl running/racing the better, i have trouble believing that at 6 hours you've pushed yourself hard enough to claim to do what i do.
I might blow up, but if you don't take chances, why are you out there?~ Christo Landry
Falling apart in a marathon, you feel utterly defeated, knowing it got the best of you. You go home and ask your mom if she still loves you~ Jacob Frey

I want to run as hard as I can. If I blow up, I blow up, it's not that big a deal. At the end of the day it's just running. ~ James Carney, USA 20km Champion
Every time I run it's with the mindset that if I die at this race, it's OK.~ Japanese marathon hero, Yuki Kawauchi

Why does everyone make such a big deal about marathons? It's just another distance.

"Russia has a long-standing tradition of training bears to perform tricks such as riding motorcycles, ice skating, and playing hockey."
i would love (LOVE!) to see a bear riding a motorcycle..
wait, how is playing hockey not the best thing a bear could do?
