6 Tips To Getting Started

You all know Bryan - Emily's husband - and most of you should that he is not really a runner. Well he's been running some lately and actually has some coaching advice. We'll call it advice from a non-runner. The mailman apparently asked him for tips on how to get started into running, so Bryan gave him the following hints:

1. Have the proper equipment. Good shoes are paramount. (He didn't say paramount, I just thought it sounded good)

2. Don't overdo it.

3. Mix it up! Do some walking, jogging and some intervals.

4. Know your limits. That is, know what you can do today.

5. Set a goal.

6. Start with runs for time. Don't worry about distance or speed (I think this was a joint effort with Emily).

So pretty sweet running advice from a non-runner, certainly all of us can use a refresher course from time to time, it's like studying for exams. You always forget the stuff from the beginning of the course but once you see it again you remember it. Except in this exam, it does not pay to cram. I think I'll write about that over on my blog.

Bryan Brown is not a certified coach, but is available for coaching. If you would like to have Bryan be your coach, contact us at the house. His experience includes running a few miles on the treadmill every so often, and working out in sleeveless tees while watching movies downstairs. He also takes the steps at work everyday. And occasionally walks around Baltimore.

If done properly, it can jumpstart you like Jason Statham in Crank 2: High Voltage (in theaters April 17).

I think also for bike racing it's a little different. I feel like overload training and the short-sale training methods work a little better to get you THROUGH a race than running.

Certainly doing 400s today wouldn't help you Brennan.

I would like to submit a formal request for this to be a weekly column.

It shall be done. Bryan Brown will provide us with insight each week.

Does his insight only pertain to running or will it be about other topics, like what color lip gloss to wear in the morning or how to hit three keggers before curfew.

No, it has to be pertinent to athletics. It can be other things about running, like preparing for an event, nutrition, mental aspect, workouts.

If he wants to do other topics we could set him up with his own blog!
