The Plan

maybe i've been inspired by ben, maybe i fell down and hit my head... whatever...

so here's the thing. i'm making a few assumptions at this point, and they go thusly:

1. i'll qualify for boston on the 26th
2. i won't take boston too seriously

given these, and the fact that i'll be running a whole bunch of miles so boston doesn't suck too much, i am formulating a plan, and it goes thusly:

1. since i'm running all those miles for boston yet i don't care how i do (i just want to run it)...
2. i might as well run some fast 5k's in the spring

so, given these and an injury free winter, i plan on being in peak 5k shape in march/april. that means shamrock right here in b-more, or...

...going to CARLSBAD on april 5th. this race is stupid fast, and if i can run what i'm hoping, i'd do pretty well in the old-guy race (30-39).

so the question is, is anyone interested? i know that everybody's got their own agenda for the winter, and that quite a few of you plan on (smartly) taking it easy. i don't really need to run this, but i feel like planning on it would give me a bunch of motivation to help get me through the long dark winter.

lets face it, when you're my age, every winter seeps deep into your bones and reminds you that you are just moments away from death. yet, it's not death that i fear, only the prospect of not getting any faster.

who's in?

the carlsbad race is awesome - i ran it when i was living in SD. They run all the age groups seperately - so, you can watch the big boys and girls run. the year i ran deena kastor broke 15 min for 5k. with boston - i'm not sure i want to run a 5k, but it would be a fun road trip!

I'll have switched over to cycling by then but I think it's a great idea. If we road trip can we tak Donna's mini?

i heart road trips. and cali. I don't heart 5K's but I'll make a sign for you that says "Star Select"

By star select I meant start select. Obvi.

i guess we could take the mini, but i was thinking motorcycles. everybody gets motorcycles.

i'll be sure to wear a fake mustache and overalls. obvi.

Just throwing this out there in addition to Ben's 5k plan, Miami Half Marathon, January 25. Who doesn't want to get the hell out of here in cold, dreary January.

I've qualified for boston three times, by a TOTAL of only 4min. I wish I were that confident (or fast) before a marathon. Go get 'em Kris. Oh yeah, I'm down for doing workouts through the winter.

Jen - the half in Miami sounds fun - I'm in if we get a few peeps interested.

Why use motorcycles when we could use tandem bikes?

i would think that would be obvi. not really, i just hate to miss an opp. to say obvi.

In other news - when are you going to pick up your MCM packet? I can't go Thursday, but perhaps we can carpool to the armory.

Only if the rest of the team comes too and we take your mini.

i'm spending the night in dc, so i'll prob. go on sat. if anyone wants to go on sat. let me know. who's actually on on the team?

in other, other news, here is the link if anyone is interested in having splits texted to them.

it looks like you have to sign up yourself, as opp. to having the runner enter your info.

MARC - the ultimate (ult?) carpool. woot.

THE KRIS said...

i think it's "ulti", but we'll have to wait for alys to give us a ruling.

Alys doesn't make the ruling. She gets it from Webb's Dic.

Hard.

alyssa said...

haha GUESS WHAT. Sad news people. The first agent I wrote to about Web's Dic turned me down :( But don't worry, we still have to wait to hear from the other bajillion agents. I will not lose hope.

Oh, and it's ult. Good job PB.

On the topic of ridic. races, check out the el paso 10k that goes 1,500 feet downhill. The course record is 25:10 or something. A buddy of mine who is no better than 33:00 ran 29:50 there.
