Michael Phelps eats 12,000 calorie a day

i remember reading that cyclists lose weight during the tour because they can't eat more than, like, 8000 calories. seems they just aren't trying hard enough...

Breakfast: 3 fried egg sandwiches, 2 cups coffee, 5-egg omlette, bowl of grits, 3 pieces of french toast, 3 chocolate chip pancakes

Lunch: 1 pound pasta, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

Dinner: 1 pound pasta, 1 large pizza, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

I conceptually don't believe it, partially because I know how many yards he swims a day, and what the theoretical amount of caloric burn rate is. The one little piece on him stated he ate 8-10,000 calories a day. Even that seems like a lot, but more reasonable. I figure he swims between 12 and 20,000 yards per day. This would amount to 2.5-4 hours a day in the pool, with another hour+ of weights and conditioning. Assume 600-1000 calories per hour, and then he probably needs 3500-4000 just to live being his size.

However, I am always excited to hear that elite athletes eat the same shit I do. Eat that, Melissa!

His typical breakfast was an excerpt from Phelps' biography read by Mr. Costas earlier this week. I think he cited chocolate milk with breakfast instead of coffee:) I feel like they said he's in the pool a total of 5 hours daily, and additionally may do dry land stuff or lifting for an hour. Either way he's burning a butt load of calories and I would totally work out that much in order to be able to eat that...not to win stupid Olympic medals.

"plus he a giant" - Kris, trying to prove he's not white.

ryan is just jealous 'cause he's not even 1/2 black. don't hate the player, baby, hate the game.

You are correct, I am jealous. I've always wanted to be black in some kind of way.

So in thinking about it more, about Phelps' eating needs...

He does potentially use more calories in his 5 hours of activity because the water is cold, and creates a demand within your body to keep warm. I notice that anytime I am done swimming I am starving, while running and cycling I usually need to wait a while, especially in the summer.

So I guess he could potentially eat that much, although I know that if I eat a pound of pasta for dinner, which I tend to do, I am not hungry for a whole pizza and a 1000kcal energy drink.
