Long Run at Loch Raven

I am planning on going long Saturday morning (7 or 8am). Click the title for a map of the meeting spot, Merrymans Mill Loop. The loop is about 14 miles, so plan on running at least that. If I feel okay, I will be adding extra. The pace will be slow (I am more interested in time on my feet), so do not worry about slowing me down. I plan on letting the terrain dictate the work. The extra portion might be faster. Comment, call (410-746-8094), or email if I should expect you or you have questions. This is a beautiful run with only 1 mile of road in the middle. Hope to see you there.

As an impartial 3rd party on this one, I'd say the earlier the better. Yeah, it sucks getting up early, especially on Saturdays, but it's summertime, and champions are born in the morn.

At 0545 this morning, Snake Hill Gang rolled out for a run. It was 87 degrees. At 0715 it was 91 and the heat index was 100. The difference in an hour, especially from 7 to 8, when the sun starts getting just that little bit higher, is enough to put you on your ass.

With today's anticipated temp at 103 (3pm) and the HI cranking to an unfathomable 115-120, overnight it won't get any cooler than it did last night, and tomorrow is another 100 degree day.

Obviously be careful, plan water stops, slow down, conserve the efforts. It's going to be real bad for another couple of days, just time to grin and bear it - and survive the day.

Yes, the conditions will be tough. I am open to starting at 6am or moving the run to Sunday.

I will stash plenty of water at the mid-point and encourage everyone to bring water bottles. In an emergency, we will never be very far from the reservoir.

Saw a cop and a fat kid at the res the other day, kid was clearly getting in trouble for going in the water. Real funny to watch him waddle on the road to the police car with no shirt or shoes

As an impartial 3rd party on this one, can anyone upload a garmin run of this loop? I've never done this run before, and am looking for more off-road long runs...

You can easily see the main loop. We added a couple short out-and-backs at the end. We now think the main loop is about 13 miles, at least in terms of time/effort.
