Opinion poll, please....

Hey, everyone...

Just taking a quick poll. Does downtown Baltimore need a running store? Where do Baltimore city runners get shoes and gear?

thanks!

There is only one answer to this question- Falls Road. Although it is possibly the most hard to get to location in the city. Jim did have a store in Fells a few years back but it never took off for some reason.

Deneen Habarta used to own the Fells Point 5k store, which was on Bond and Lancaster in Fells Point. The store was a perfect size and I thought the location was pretty sweet. When City Sports was preparing to open up, it needed some firepower, so Jim absorbed the store. He then moved the location next to Soundgarden on Thames. It was a cool setup inside, but people go to Falls Road for Jim - so most people, even if they lived downtown, were going up to Falls Road. Deneen eventually decided to move, and Jim couldn't be in two places at once, so he shut it down.

City Sports exists as a place to acquire some kinds of running gear, but other than Josh (who works there) and Dr. J (who occasionally leads runs via Brooks from there), I don't know anyone who patronizes that place.

Pretty much everyone on this blog goes to Falls Road. If there was a running store in the city, unless it was owned and operated by Falls Road, I would not go to it. If it were, for instance, owned and operated by Charm City Run, I would probably go so far as to deter people from going there.

Ha - I just read again and none of us truly answered the original question of "does Baltimore city need a running store?"

I don't know where you would put it that would be convenient, if a Gold's Gym can't stay open in the Inner Harbor, I'd say a running store would struggle. Unlike other real cities that have wide sidewalks, you don't see people really going for runs "downtown" here. Fells was as good a place as any to have a store, but I don't think the demand is there for solely (no pun intended) a running store. A store like City Sports, or a small pro shop in one of the gyms, probably cuts it for most of the people.
