All you need to know about participating in HUBS OF FURY
Saturday, June 26th
8:00pm
Rendezvous at Fort McHenry
But before you just show up and start drinking, here are some important tips that will help make HOF a fun and safe event for all:
1) SAFETY First. Yes, I realize I sound like a parent, but from what I hear, getting hit by a car is no fun. What does "safety" mean? Well, if you have a light, bring that. If you're a really unlucky soul, maybe a helmet. Tie your shoes and make sure you don't have any loose laces or pants that could get caught in your chain. Do NOT wear flip flops. Make sure your BICYCLE is operating properly. If you need help with that, I suggest you get a hold of someone who knows about bikes prior to riding it. Don't wait until 7:45!
2) CASH money. Some of the bars we go into may look down upon credit cards, or not accept them at all. Bring some cash! Or, plan on buying a few people's drinks at one place to meet a respectful credit card minimum.
3) Pop LOCK and drop it. You are responsible for your own machine. Bring a lock that means! As we roll up to each bar we survey the best places to lock bikes up. Inevitably we just lock a bunch of bikes together.
4) BUDDY System. Things go much smoother with a buddy (or two, or three). You should find a buddy when we first get there and work with them through the evening. Share drinks, buy each other drinks, lock your bikes up together.
5) The Captain says, drink responsibly. Remember, being drunk and riding a bike is technically an offense. If we follow the rules of the roads we ride on, we'll be fine. But, that means don't get out of control drunk! You know how much drinking you're able to handle, but I do not have a problem cutting you off if you become OOC. You do NOT have to drink at every bar, nor do you have to have a full beverage. That's why I recommend sharing.
If you follow these rules to the letter we'll have a great night!
Where are we going?
1. Down the Hatch, 1157 Haubert Street (Locust Point), 8:15pm
2. Sly Fox Pub, 823 E. Fort Ave (South Baltimore), 8:50pm
3. Pratt Street (Inner Harbor), 9:30pm (this may either be The Nest or Pratt St Ale House)
4. Mustang Alley, 1300 Bank St (Little Italy/Harbor East), 10:10pm
5. The Whistling Oyster, Broadway (Fells Point) 10:50pm
6. Bartenders, 2218 Boston St (Canton), 11:30pm
7. Canton Dockside? 3301 Boston St (Canton), 12:00am (time dependent)
8. SQUARE
As a final thought, you may be thinking - holy crap, I'm going to be pretty drunk, how am I going to ride my bike home? Well, you are welcome to stay at mine and Ed's house, 3903 Fleet St. It is close to where we finish up. We have plenty of room and furniture to sleep on. I prefer you contemplate crashing at SOMEone's house if you do not live in the immediate city areas. If you'd like, feel free to arrive at my house around 7pm and then we can caravan down to Fort McHenry together at 7:40pm.

Tacos y Burritos
The title has nothing to do with this post. I was just thinking to myself, does this group run anymore? Not that it's a bad thing, but I feel like all our activities revolve around drinking (usually while running or riding a bike), birthdays and drinking. Also I do realize everybody IS running, just seems like turnout has been small for "group" runs.
With that in mind, the spring season is done, and for those of you are are physically able to run, let's see some chatter about running plans again! I know we suffered a blow (too bad he didn't) when Ben left, but we need some new blood to lead some runs now that I'm retired.
Suggestions from me:
Mondays - they're fun, come on out and run. Great way to start the week.
Tuesdays - even if you don't do the workout, come up, run, then eat Chipotle. Not a bad Tuesday.
Wednesdays - don't make Cheese run by himself!
Thursdays - entirely possible the return of Thursday Night Swims at Gunpowder is right around the corner...
Fridays - I used to run Patapsco every Friday with guys like Kris, Kip, Prada, BG, Jake, Justin, Travis, Steve Levin, Arjun, Alex, Chrissie. Is it possible we can bring this one back??
Weekends - now that fall marathon training is about to begin, I'm sure more long runs and workouts will be done. Let's get a post on the blog about them. Conversely, if that's too much effort, send me your run plans and I'll even do it for you.
Some things to look forward to in the weeks to come:
Columbia/Bike Jam: This Sunday! Columbia's a wee bit early, but Bike Jam is at Patterson Park and Dr. K races at 2pm and Alex is at 4 maybe. Then perhaps Kisling's or pizza party after??
Dreaded Druid Hills: A truly unique race in Baltimore, and one of the hardest you'll ever run. That's why none of us ever run it. Traditionally we all volunteer, and since Wire to Wire will be timing and Pete is RD, let's get those of you who are around to come out and help Saturday June 5!
Hubs of Fury 6??? That's right, it's about that time. Tentative weekend plan right now is Saturday June 26.
Rockville Twilight: The race of the summer, there is no better event. I know some of you will be going to the Jack Johnson concert that evening but this...costs less. Saturday July 17. Always a fun time.
So sound off! The blog's been fairly quiet lately. Any suggestions or comments can be directed to the comment section or to me!

Body Language
I don't speak Spanish, Japanese or French
The way you move your body definitely makes sense
Body language is universal. So is being a pimp.
Ben Ingram and Denise Knickman are pimps. Ben planned on doing the Harrisburg marathon as a long run tune-up prior to JFK, and said he wouldn't try to run under 3 hours. Lo and behold, there's Benji's name in 7th position with a 2:47:33. Ben now possesses 3 of the 8 fastest marathon times run this season by any of us. While this was sweet, it definitely did not trump the basket of sweets that Denise earned with her marathon WIN in 3:02:05. This was her second marathon win this year and a season's best time.
Lauren Dennisuk set a 5 minute PR with a 1:32:24, taking 13th overall, at the Gynecological Cancer Foundation Half in DC. This inaugural event drew a competitive crowd (no doubt for the dollar bills that were on the line) and also Mandy Moore allegedly!
Greg Hanscom, fresh off his speedy track session at Relay Night, ran an unbelievable 50 miler at Mountain Masochist in VA I think. 23rd overall, 8:43:04.
Dustin Meeker showed his wheels, winning the Downs Park 5 miler in Annapolis in 26:11. Big win!
Ryan Schmidt has really gotten back into running full steam. This time he did his first ever half marathon and ran 1:27:07 at the Van Nolasco Half in Hawaii.
The Purple Drink Athlete of the Week this week goes to the well-deserving Denise Knickman. The award is her second this year.
More importantly, Hubs of Fury 5: Dead Man Riding, went off without a hitch. We hit all the bars we had on the schedule, ran on time, suffered no mechanicals or crashes - it was a great event. Hubs 6 planning will begin soon, I really think we can do a winter version.
Tonight is our LAST Tuesday Night Track workout for the year...at least official one. Time for some well-earned rest and mostly just a break from going up there every Tuesday. The workout will be short, either a mile followed by 4x400 or just 8x400. The weather seems alright and we'll hit Chipotle afterwards.

Voting Scandal Rocks TWSS!
Broward County, FL - Residents of the beleagured, voting-incapable county, which was at the center of voting snafus in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections, breathed a collective sigh of relief this weekend as Team That's What She Said relieved them of their dubious distinction as worst voters ever.
I had to laugh last week as the voting for our Hubs of Fury name was taking place. First it was fairly even between the two frontrunners, with Dead Man Riding possessing a slight lead. Then after Kris' plea for FURINOX votes, the spike in voting was considerable. Furinox seized the lead, but overnight Gallup polls showed that an inordinate amount of votes were cast in favor of Dead Man Riding. So either someone was clearing their cookies or voting from every computer they could find, because we certainly never have over 50 people voting. I don't even think that many people read this thing.
That said, I declare Hubs of Fury 5: Dead Man Riding, to be the name. This is (hopefully) the only time we can use that name really, and as Emily pointed out, it fits in well with the around-Halloween theme. Furinox can still be used, and perhaps my two choices which received barely any votes, can be used at some point as well.
Marine Corps Marathon: Following last year's unbelievable marathon debut by Will Knox at Philly (2:30:24), we were all anxiously awaiting the sequel. But, with his new job came a little less time to put in "that type" of training, so expectations were lowering heading into this past weekend's MCM. It seemed like a great day to run, and Will used an impressive negative split (1:26 first half, 1:21 second half) to run a 1:47:15 for 106th place.
Marine Corps 10k: Dr. J had her sights set on this race and was looking for a big result - which she seemed to get, running a 40:12 for 3rd place woman.
Charlottesville Fall Classic 10k: Eileen headed down to C-Ville for this race, which attracted some elite talent, and she took 8th F/22nd Overall with a 40:53.
Our Purple Drink Athlete of the Week - for the first time this year and the first since his marathon last year - goes to Will Knox. He's done just 3 races this year and they've all come since Labor Day.
The week ahead looks to be decent, nice today, but some rain in the forecast over the next few. That means we may get wet tomorrow. I'll be there but may be a couple minutes late so get the warmup rolling. The workout is going to be 3x[400-800-400] with 1:00 after intervals and 2:00 after sets. The idea of this workout is to do these at your goal pace for whatever race you've got coming up. That means it probably won't feel that hard, which is why the rest is short.
And CONGRATULATIONS to Kyle Smits and his wife, who welcomed their first child, Ella Jane Smits, on Friday!

This is the REMIX
Welcome to the online edition of the Monday morning email.
Most of you have heard about the various races that went on this weekend, and can obviously read the results on the right sidebar, but here is some more detail.
Arbutus 10k - Dave Berdan won the event for the 3rd straight year in a time of 31:50. A remarkable improvement from RFOK just last month, and apparently the course is a little long. Dave is feeling fit heading into a 5 mile race this weekend in Lititz, PA. A few years ago he ran 33:00 at Arbutus and went on to run 24:46 at the 5 miler, so yeah, he's pretty ready. Dave Berardi was 5th overall and first old guy in 36:16. 40 second improvement from last year. And we of course know how Denise did since she showed up to HUBS OF FURY.
The big news coming out of the print version of the Washington Running Report is that our favorite old guy, Kris Simms, made the rankings for the 35-39 age group. As far as we know this is his debut on the scene, coming it at #17 (final ranked position). Great job Kris, we're really proud. Of course Kipchirchir, Kyle and Dave Berdan are all also ranked in the open division.
Hubs of Fury: 4th of Fury took place on Saturday. Those who attended were treated to a moving speech by yours truly. The event kicked off at 8pm where a group of 20 met at the gates of Fort McHenry. There were a bunch of Hubs virgins, including Joel Brusewitz and his girlfriend Alix, Brian Desmond, Emily Gould, JIM ADAMS, Denise Knickman, Colin Brooks and I think it may have been Barf's first as well. Brennan - it wasn't your first, was it? We got things started in Locust Point and then watched the fireworks from Arjun's roof. Our trip through the Harbor was full of excitement and nervousness, as there were a few crashes and a mechanical. Then we found out that Mustang Alley and Bar were both closed. A quick change brought us to Wharf Rat, and then Bad Decisions. From there it was the climbing stage to Blue Hill, which was dead but it was cool seeing that dude do a backflip. Final bar was Pickled Parrot with a sick dance party and mojitos. Then we hit the Square for pretzel dogs and Kris ate 5 of them.
So this week's Purple Drink Athlete of the Week was definitely up for grabs, as Julia set a CR, Chrissie ran a hell of a race, Justin had an awesome track meet...but ultimately Denise Knickman achieved one of her goals from her index card - to attend a Hubs of Fury. That, and her 3rd place at Arbutus led to her first PDAW of the year.

Hubs of Fury: 4th of Fury
Well folks, you're going to want to bookmark this post because it contains the information you'll need for this weekend's event!
Details:
Saturday, July 4th, 8pm rendezvous at the gates of Fort McHenry.
8:15pm: J. Patrick's Irish Pub, 1371 Andre St, Locust Point
9:00pm: Arjun's house, 1321 Clarkson St, Federal Hill. Here we will watch the fireworks, which begin at 9:30pm. They should last until just before 10. We need AOS (asses on seats) by 10pm to make it over to...
10:15pm: Mustang Alley, 1300 Bank St, Little Italy (faces Central Ave)
10:45pm: Bar, Lancaster St, Fells Point (right by Max's)
11:15pm: Bad Decisions, Fleet St, Fells Point (across from Ale Mary's)
11:45pm: The Laughing Pint, 3531 Gough St, Brewer's Hill/Highlandtown. It's north on S. Conkling, near my house. We'll probably park bikes by my crib so as not to have them stolen.
12:15am: Make our way toward the Square. Blue Hill on Conkling if possible, otherwise Walt's Inn for karaoke tribute to Michael Jackson or something on the Square. And pretzel dogs.
Those desiring to leave with me are welcome, I will be leaving my house around 7:15 to ride down to the Fort, taking the slow and scenic route. Also, if you need to crash, you are welcome to do so, but perhaps bring over a sleeping bag/pillow or something. Remember while this is generally a very unsafe event, safety first. If you are unsure of your cycling ability you may want to bring a helmet. Try and bring a workable bike, as our mechanics will likely not be able to make more than minor adjustments. Outfits are encouraged, not required. The idea is to make it to all of these bars for ONE drink and then roll. You certainly don't have to drink at each place, or you can share a bev with a friend. When the conductor says it's time to go though, it's time to roll to the next place. Also for the portion at Arjun's, you are encouraged to bring a snack or bev, you can put it in a backpack or we can stop there to drop off if it's something that needs to be cold.
